Embark on an unforgettable trek along Kilimanjaro’s Marangu Route, passing through rainforests and alpine deserts to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. This journey offers breathtaking views and the ultimate challenge of summiting the Roof of Africa.
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Elevation: 1,890m to 2,720m
Distance: 8 km / 5 miles
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
We depart Moshi and head to Marangu Gate to complete park formalities. The trail ascends through lush rainforest, offering views of blue monkeys, before opening up to beautiful hillsides as we approach Mandara Hut.
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Elevation: 2,720m to 3,720m
Distance: 12 km / 7 miles
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Habitat: Heath
We continue through the forest before reaching high moorland, where we may get our first glimpses of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The day ends at Horombo Hut, offering beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.
Day 3: Acclimatization Day – Mawenzi Ridge
Elevation: 3,720m to 4,390m
Distance: 5 km / 3 miles
Hiking Time: 2-3 hours
Habitat: Heath
We spend the day acclimatizing with a short hike to Mawenzi Ridge, offering stunning views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. After exploring the area, we return to Horombo Hut to rest.
Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Elevation: 3,720m to 4,720m
Distance: 10 km / 6 miles
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
The route crosses the lunar desert of the "Saddle" between Mawenzi and Kibo. We reach Kibo Hut, located at the base of the Kibo crater, where we rest and prepare for our summit push.
Day 5: Summit Day – Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
Elevation: 4,720m to 5,895m (descent to 3,720m)
Distance: 6 km / 4 miles ascent, 16 km / 10 miles descent
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours ascent, 4-5 hours descent
Habitat: Arctic / Heath
We begin the ascent at midnight, trekking through the night to Gilman’s Point at sunrise, where you’ll witness breathtaking views. We then proceed to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating, we descend to Horombo Hut for a well-earned rest.
Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
Elevation: 3,720m to 1,890m
Distance: 20 km / 12 miles
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Our final day involves a descent through the rainforest to Marangu Gate, where we collect our summit certificates. From here, we return to Moshi for a relaxing evening.
